Please send 3 to 5 pieces per submission uploaded in a single document.
We don't do Bios. But include a website in the cover letter section if you'd like us to link to it online.
Sim-Sub is fine. Multi-Sub is fine. Unpublished work strongly preferred.
Issues are themed. Not every submission must use the theme, however about half of each issue will be devoted to themed work.
CURRENT THEMES | July 2012 [Stolen Plums]: For the July Issue we are asking for work that steals at least one line from a William Carlos Williams poem and incorporates at least one fruit. Please cite the stolen line (we'll figure out how to cite the fruit).
(Deadline: June 1)
Please note that we are still considering [Black Market] work for future issues (see category, below, for details).
At this time we are unable to offer payment or print copies for publication. However, a free PDF will be emailed to every contributor, at-cost print copies will be made available for pre-order, and the work will always be available to view for free online.
Prose
Size limit: 420 Characters (About 75 Words)
Short, Fast, and Deadly seeks micro prose told in 420 characters or less (i.e. the original maximum length of a FB status update). Yes, that's characters, not words.Weird? Okay. Funny? Okay. Mystery? Okay. Literary? Okay. Zombie-themed?
Okay. But it better be damn good.
Yeah. That sums it up. Make it damn good. And read a couple before you submit. Besides that, just keep it R-rated. We're pretty sure our mothers read this page. Yours might too. We don't mind if she flinches a bit but we don't want her keeling over or anything.
Poetry
Size limit: 140 Characters (about 25 words)
Joseph A. W. Quintela had to stop reading poetry because it was making his eyes bleed. But thank goodness for Sarah Long, who bravely stepped in and is now taking the poetry bullet for SF&D!140 characters or less. Damn good still applies. Applies double, in fact. Go to it.
Oh wait! Almost forgot. No Haiku! For the love of God. No Haiku.
Word Art
Size limit: None
Bring on the Word Art.What is Word Art? We'll clumsily define it as work that incorporates characters (letters, numbers, punctuation, in some form (not necessarily as words) into the visual medium. Yeah, we know, that probably doesn't help. Good luck anyway. Word art should be rated no-more-than-R, and sent in .jgp format with a resolution of 300ppi and a base Width of 4.5 inches and a corresponding maximum height of 6.75 inches. Go to it.
Note: although our issuu editons are produced in color, our print editions are in black & white. Please keep this in mind. Any color work should translate to b&w without losing its overall impact.
Black Market
Size limit: 100 Words
Beginning in February 2012, SF&D will feature a new section called [Black Market]. [Black Market] has a slightly longer 100 word constraint but the added rule that every word must be "plagiarized". In other words, the prose or poem (title excepted) must be entirely composed of excerpts from other work. Multiple source "mash-ups" are allowable and, in fact, encouraged. In general, limit individual quotations to blocks of 10 words or less in keeping with the "fair use" copyright clause. We require that you include a works cited list (author and title; excluded from word count) with every submission, though inline citation is not required. Erasure work will be considered if the source text-block is <100 words (i.e. erased words are included in the word count). In general, please send all work in 1 doc or docx file. Multiple file upload is for jpg users only.
rIgor mortUS
We have set up a separate website and submissions manager for rIgor mort.US. Please visit: http://www.rigormort.usPLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT BELOW. rIgor mort.US submissions received at SF&D will be deleted unread.
Chapbooks
SF&D Monthly is the flagship publication of Deadly Chaps Press. Deadly Chaps also publishes an annual summer series of chapbooks, print editions of Red Ceiling Press eBooks (RED&DEADLY), poet/artist sketchbooks (A5), and a series of chapbooks from Sarah Lawrence College students, faculty and alum (SLCwrites). We are currently full for the 2012 summer series and all other series are generally solicited through invitation from our editorial staff. However, if you have been published at least twice in SF&D and have a unique chapbook proposal for the 2013 series, you may send it by for consideration: 100 word abstract with at least 5 sample pieces that conform to our constraints.
Please note, at this time we lean pretty hard toward the experimental where chapbooks are concerned. Read a few of our titles at www.deadlychaps.com. Radland, Dancers on Rock, and On the Toad are particularly good examples of the kind of work we're presently seeking.
